Deep Mute, bridging the communication gap

Deep Mute, one of the systems that will be presented at IndabaX Malawi, learns, interprets, and synthesizes sign language using a variety of deep learning techniques, including face and body tracking in real-time, long short-term memory (LSTM) for sequence analysis and prediction, natural language processing, sound analysis and classification.

Over 360,000,000 people worldwide, including over 70,000,000 in Africa and over 50,000 in Malawi, suffer from hearing loss. Because of this, there is a significant communication gap between those who have normal hearing and those who have hearing loss. Sign language is employed, but sign language misunderstanding is a problem.

Deep learning technology is being used by Malawian researchers like Blessings Mlundira and Ethel Phiri to develop solutions for sign language.
